Back Talk

Review:

Tired of being in the dark about back pain? Afraid to go to the doctor just to say, "Well, sometimes it hurts here, and sometimes I have a pain there, and sometimes my foot hurts . . ."? Back Talk, by Loren M Fishman, M.D. and Carol Ardman will guide you through the maze of questions about back pain and what to do about it.

The book begins with a chapter explaining the anatomy and functions of the spine and follows through with chapters on diagnosis, when and what professional help to seek, forms and names of pain, causes of lower back pain, exercises to ease pain, and preventative measures. I found the chapters on diagnosis very helpful because it explains how to sort out your symptoms and how to relate them to your physician, so he can give an accurate diagnosis and nothing will be missed. There is an example of a "pain questionnaire" that will help you document where, what kind, and how much pain you have. You will walk into the doctor's office with some idea of what questions will be asked and what questions to ask.

There are so many treatments for back pain and just about all of them are explained in this book — from treating your own back to surgery. The information is backed up with some case studies, facts and statistics. If you have back pain, definitely read this book to get a total overview of why you have it and how to take care of it!
