It is known stress can cause different physical problems; however a recent survey revealed, if you experience scalp itch, stress could be the cause.
Seventy-five percent of people polled said they experience scalp itch, but only 38.3 percent said they suffer from dandruff, according to the survey conducted by the Scalpicin Web site, www.scalpicin.com.
Scalp itch can be related to eczema, dry scalp and seborrheic dermatitis, according to the survey. Even something as simple as stress can contribute to this common condition which can occur daily for some 58 percent of those polled and several times a week for 23 percent.
"Dandruff and scalp itch are not necessarily correlated. Although many dandruff sufferers cite scalp itch as one of their symptoms, not all cases of scalp itch are caused by dandruff. The two conditions are not interchangeable," according to Dr. Jerome Shupak, a clinical professor of dermatology at New York University.
"Daily stress can exacerbate scalp itch," noted Shupak.
Fifty-three percent of those polled said their scalp itch is worse when they are stressed. Fifty-seven percent of respondents agree their scalp itch is "extremely" or "very" bothersome to their daily lives.
"Most people treat the symptom and not the problem," said Shupak. "By using a dandruff shampoo, scalp itch may not be relieved, because in actuality, dandruff is not the cause of the itching."
