Protection From Harmful UV Rays Still Needed During Winter Months
Many people believe once winter rolls around there is no longer a need
to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Unfortunately, many people
are wrong.
Everyone
should protect their faces with a sunscreen containing broad-spectrum
UVA/UVB protection all year round, according to the Olay UV Exposure
Study, led by principal investigator Dr. Darrell Rigel, clinical
professor of dermatology at NYU.
Results of
the study revealed a significant lack of knowledge about ultraviolet
light, and women receive more sun exposure than they thought. As little
as 16 percent of participants knew UVA exposure can occur indoors
through windows and only 18 percent understood how UVA and UVB rays
differ.
"The results
of this exposure study illustrate women's misconceptions about daily
sun exposure and serves as a call to action for women to protect
themselves from UVB and UVA exposure every day," said Rigel.
What Everyone Should Know About UV
- UVA Can Cause: premature aging
Risk of Exposure: can penetrate glass windows
- UVB Can Cause: sunburn
Risk of Exposure: outdoors & through open windows
- UVA & UVB Can Cause: aging & skin cancer
Risk of Exposure: primarily outdoors/all year round
Solutions for Broad-Spectrum Protection
People need
to understand they are susceptible to UV exposure even indoors, so
Rigel suggests, "a sunscreen product with broad-spectrum protection
— not just on certain occasions — but every day."
