Spring Time Nemesis: Allergies
Most people
are thrilled spring is here. The weather is warming up, birds are
chirping and the flowers are in bloom. For others, spring can be
bittersweet, especially if you suffer from allergies.
The following tips from Hoechst Marion Roussel Inc. will help get you going when allergies are a drag.
1. To reduce
pollen exposure during high pollen season, plan a vacation to a place
that has low pollen counts, such as the beach or the mountains.
2. Do not dry clothing and bedding outside on a clothesline where pollen can stick to them as they dry.
3. Wash your
hair before going to bed during the pollen season. This removes any
pollen that may have accumulated in your hair during the day so that
you will not be in contact with it while you sleep.
4. When planning outdoor activities, remember pollen exposure is the highest during the midday and afternoon.
5. If you are
allergic to pollen and have a pet, it is best to keep it either inside
or outside during high pollen season, as opposed to letting it go in
and out periodically. Pollen can stick to animal fur and it can easily
hitch a ride into your house.
6. To reduce
irritation during pollen season, do not wear contact lenses. Pollen
grains can become trapped underneath lenses. Eyeglasses may be a better
choice.
7. When
ordering a drink during allergy season, remember alcohol stimulates
mucus production and dilates vessels, worsening runny nose and nasal
congestion.
8. To reduce nasal congestion without the use of medication, sleep with your head slightly elevated.
9. It is important to see your physician about treatment options for seasonal allergic rhinitis.
10. Before
leaving for a summer vacation, remember to fill any prescriptions and
to carry any allergy medications along with you.
